Meanwhile, Nick tests his team with an unusual metal item used to make ruffles and frills in starched linen. What could it be? Down the road in Derby, auctioneer James Lewis is taking the bids, but can he hammer out a profit for the teams?

Long before Paddington Bear, there was another bear who captured the imagination of children up and down the country. His name was Rupert, and he was the creation of illustrator Mary Tourtel. Eric Knowles meets art historian Howard Smith to discuss how Rupert started out in a newspaper comic strip in the 1920s, before becoming the character in yellow tartan trousers so beloved today. Bearing up under the pressure of buying three profitable items in an hour are two teams of friends, each with their own antiques experts. Joining Catherine Southon are old college pals Sarah and Jenny, who are on the lookout for snuff boxes, tea caddies, writing slopes and jewellery. In blue are their opponents, mortgage brokers Digs and Jay. Skippering them is Jonathan Pratt. The boys in blue quiz JP about the difference between toby jugs and character jugs, while Jenny makes Catherine blush when she picks out a vesta case with a cheeky image on the front. Hoping to spare the teams’ blushes at his auction in Chichester is Nick Hall, who takes bids from a packed saleroom.

The secrets of the ‘railway stinks’ are revealed in this episode from the East Midlands. Natasha Raskin Sharp meets retired railway chemist Dave Smith, who spent 34 years analysing trains and tracks. Dave and his colleagues earned their dubious nickname from working in smelly laboratories. It’s full steam ahead at the antiques fair at Uttoxeter Racecourse, where two teams of friends hope that Natasha’s challenges won’t derail their shopping plans. With expert Irita Marriott by their side, supermarket workers Darren and Sarah spot an early-20th-century tray made of copper from HMS Britannia. It doesn’t float Irita’s boat, so the tray goes on the back burner. Over on the other side of the fair, John Cameron and his blues, Barbara and Amanda, put the squeeze on the seller of a bacon press until they spot a dink in the metal. And eyebrows are raised at Colin Young’s auction when a piece of Scandinavian jewellery, rejected by one team, goes under the hammer for their opponents.
