Oxfordshire, 1922. The sleepy hamlet of Gallowstree Common was shaken by the violent murder of 55-year-old pub landlady Sarah Blake. She suffered over 60 wounds across her head, neck and hands, and her throat had been cut. A controversial police investigation led to 15-year-old Jack Hewitt being charged with her murder. The last person to report seeing the victim alive, Jack was subjected to exhaustive questioning, during which the police claimed he confessed to her murder. Despite Jack’s denials, he was found guilty and detained at His Majesty’s Pleasure, only escaping the death penalty because he was a child.

The barristers return to their investigation of a curious case, a poultry farmer who buried the body of his fiancee under a chicken run but claimed to be innocent of her murder.

Crowborough, East Sussex, 1924. 26-year-old Elsie Cameron arrived at the farm of her fiance, 24-year-old Norman Thorne, determined to set a date for their wedding. When a few days later Elsie had not returned home to London, her parents raised the alarm. Thorne claimed to know nothing of her whereabouts and offered to help police with their enquiries. But after a tip off from a neighbour, the net closed in on Thorne. Elsie’s possessions were uncovered at his farm, and Thorne changed his story. He claimed that Elsie had committed suicide in his hut, and in a panic he had dismembered and buried her body under his chicken run.

Season 2, Episode 03 –
Criminal barristers Sasha Wass and Jeremy Dein return to their investigation of a toxic love triangle which culminated in the mysterious murder of Yorkshire farm owner Frederick Morton.
Yorkshire, 1933, at 3am on a September morning. A mother, her daughter and the child’s nanny left their farmhouse to find that their barn was ablaze. The farm owner, 30-year-old Frederick Morton, was nowhere to be seen. The fire brigade and police attended and the fire was extinguished, but later that morning in the ruins of the barn, the charred remains of Frederick Morton were discovered. A post mortem revealed he had been shot.
Suspicion soon fell on 35-year-old farm employee Ernest Brown, who had recently been demoted from groom to an odd job man. He was accused of shooting Frederick Morton when he had arrived home the evening before, then setting the barn on fire to cover up the crime. At trial, the explosive revelation that Ernest Brown had been having an affair with his boss’s wife Dorothy behind the farm owner’s back caused a sensation – especially as Mrs Morton was a key witness for the prosecution. The motive was said to be love and revenge, yet by the time of the murder, Ernest Brown and Mrs Morton’s affair was over, and he was said to be happy with his new role at the farm.
Two generations on, Clare, a descendent of Ernest Brown’s cousin, along with her son Archie, hoped to discover the truth behind Frederick Morton’s death and whether their ancestor might have been innocent. They called on the barristers to see if they could shed new light on the evidence and persuade Judge Radford that Ernest Brown’s conviction was unsafe.
Now a year on from their detailed review of the case, Jeremy and Sasha meet up once again with Clare, who remains unable to accept her ancestor's conviction. Can an enlightening encounter with a local who met Ernest Brown, and the theory of a modern day crime writer, shed new light upon the case?

Leading criminal barristers Sasha Wass and Jeremy Dein look back at their inquiry into their oldest case to date - the murder of a female canal boat passenger 180 years ago, which resulted in the boat crew being convicted and publicly hanged in front of 10,000 spectators.

Rugeley, Staffordshire, 1839. At dawn on a summer morning, labourers pulled the lifeless body of 37-year-old Christina Collins from the Trent and Mersey Canal; she had drowned. Within an hour, the narrowboat’s crew were in custody, most of them still drunk from the whisky they had stolen from their cargo hold. They claimed Christina had committed suicide.

At trial, the damning evidence of a controversial key witness led to three men, including 27-year-old George Thomas, being convicted of Christina’s murder. Two of them, including Thomas, would hang.

180 years later, two of George Thomas’s relatives, Jeanette and Patricia, were convinced of his innocence and called upon the barristers to see if they could shed new light on the unusual legal proceedings. Exploring questions of character, forensic evidence and legal history, Jeremy and Sasha attempted to find enough new evidence to convince a judge that George Thomas was wrongly convicted.

Now, just a year on from their initial investigation, Jeremy and Sasha catch up with Jeanette to discover that the case is far from closed. Determined to seek justice for the three convicted men, Jeanette has called upon the assistance of some high profile supporters as she begins her campaign for a royal pardon.

Leading criminal barristers Sasha Wass and Jeremy Dein return to their investigation of a notorious poisoning from 1911, when a wealthy lodger suddenly died. Did the landlord have murder in mind?
London, 1911. Insurance salesman Frederick Seddon arranged a hasty funeral for his tenant, Miss Eliza Barrow, who had, it was initially believed, died from diarrhoea and exhaustion after a brief illness.
Miss Barrow’s relatives were shocked to discover that not only had the family not been informed, but that Eliza had signed over her extensive assets and properties to the landlord, Frederick Seddon, whom she had known for less than a year, in the belief he would look after her recently adopted 10-year-old son, Ernest Grant. Eliza’s body was exhumed and found to contain fatal levels of arsenic. Frederick Seddon and his wife Margaret were arrested and charged. Seddon claimed Miss Barrow accidentally killed herself by consuming the poison from insect repellent fly papers in her living quarters. Mrs Seddon was acquitted and returned to the couple’s five children, but in March 1912, Frederick Seddon was convicted of murder at the Old Bailey and sentenced to death.
